Case Examples of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome
Ms. Zhang, who is 1.5 meters tall and weighs 70 kilograms, has suffered from long-term snoring and frequent awakenings due to suffocation during sleep. She has been forced to sleep in a sitting position, yet snoring still persists. Additionally, oxygen deficiency has caused cyanosis in her limbs and face.
After examination at the hospital’s Sleep Medicine Department, it was found that her sleep apnea was severe: she experienced over 900 apnea episodes throughout the night even while sitting, with an average blood oxygen saturation of only 60% (dropping to a minimum of 20%), indicating severe hypoxemia. She also suffered from daytime drowsiness and irritability.
The Sleep Medicine Department adopted non-invasive ventilation — delivering air through a mask via a ventilator set to a specific mode — to correct her hypoxemia. After treatment, Ms. Zhang can now sleep lying down, with improved sleep quality and no longer experiences daytime drowsiness. Her blood oxygen saturation has risen to 92%, her weight has decreased slightly, and her overall health and mental state have improved significantly.
